Why the … 80s drumming videos? Here’s the story:
I was hired to record an 80s loops collection for Image Sounds GmbH and used the soundcheck to play around a bit and check out these analog electronic drums. Then I started posting some of the grooves on Instagram and had the idea to ask some fellow musicians to just play something 80s-like over them.
This turned into a small series of videos and I’m a huge fan of my colleagues’ creativity!
These cats helped me out so far: Andreas Hillesheim, Andreas Viereck, Marius Goldhammer, Lutz Krajenski, Alexander Rink, Jürgen Scholz und Stefan Hergenröder.
In addition, the drum grooves are available without backing music, so that any instrumentalist can have fun with them.
In the videos I use SIMMONS SDS V, SDS VI, Analog Clap Trap, Digital Clap Trap, and aSYNARE.
All this combined with my Sonor SQ2 Vintage Maple and Heavy Maple drums, Remo Emperor clear drumheads on the toms (10″, 14″, 16″), Ambassador coated on the snare (14″), Powerstroke clear on the kick (20″).
The cymbals used are: 8″ Meinl Byzance Splash 14″ Meinl Byzance Medium Hi-Hat 14″ Meinl Byzance Foundry Reserve Hi-Hat (alt: Generation X Stack with Dual Splash on top) 16″ Meinl Byzance Jazz Thin Crash 20″ Meinl Byzance Dual Trash Crash 20″ Meinl Byzance Jazz Thin Crash 22″ Meinl Byzance Tradition Ride
Played with Rohema Stephan Emig Signature Sticks (but they are only somewhat suitable for the hard Simmons pad surface) or the Light Rock 5A.
Recorded using Pro Tools and mixed with Ableton Live. The acoustic 80s sound was mainly created with Soundtoys Lite Plate, Ableton’s Drum Buss, Gate and Reverb, and Waves CLA plug-ins. Plus some EQ and compression.
Recorded at Horus Sound Studio Hannover.
